Andy Stanton 01/08/2014 | Just a brief comment which will open up a new thread for August 2014 and close the thread for July 2014. Last month's comments doubled the size of the largest early thread which was June 2014. I would just like to comment that after the midnight oil I've burned getting this thing up and running just how gratifying it is for me to know that people are finding it useful. Thanks Top | Home JeffT 01/08/2014 I don't think I need to add anything!! ![]() Click to ENLARGE video clip Top | Home Andy Stanton 05/08/2014 Once again I am grateful to Jeff for identifying another little glitch in the programming. When you add a song the title of the song forms the name of the text file opened to file the song. If you use certain punctuation marks in the title then there are problems. I've now set it so that all punctuation marks that might create problems in a file name are removed prior to checking. Top | Home Andy Stanton 09/08/2014 Well folks, I've finally resolved the copyright situation. Contrary to popular sentiment we don't have license to reproduce copyrighted lyrics willy nilly just because we want to sing them accompanied by a ukulele. Not only that, but you will be staggered about how much stuff is still within copyright, e.g. "I Have A Lovely Bunch Of Coconuts!" There is a loop hole that allows us to copy material if it is pursuit of private study. To that end I am making links for copyrighted content available only to people who have logged in, and that on the understanding the those people do not republish. The stuff now in the public domain will be available to all. I know people might think I'm being a bit precious about this, but websites have been closed down for less. Top | Home chris 09/08/2014 Andy how does that apply to performing copyrighted material in public. Top | Home Andy Stanton 09/08/2014 Technically, you should have either the permission of the copyright holder or you should secure a performing rights license. The reality is that when performing stuff in public unless you are hugely successful nobody will know you have infringed their copyright, so they won't bother. Recording is a different matter. If you going to sell your recordings you will need to secure a performing rights license to do so. The reason why I'm exercising some caution with the website is that we could be accused of republishing copyright material, and people like Google are getting quite hot on closing things down if too many liberties are taken. There are exceptions to this; e.g. copying material for private study is one of them. Top | Home chris 10/08/2014 Thanks Andy that's clarified what could be a tricky issue. Top | Home David Hall 11/08/2014 Here we are again and with a couple of notices. We have been asked if we would like to take part in a charity do for "Help for Heroes" charity at the White Hart on Thursday 11th Sept in the afternoon. This is short notice and I have no further details as yet. We can discuss further on Wednesday. We have also been asked to perform for the local Guide Dogs Association at Claypole Village Hall on Saturday November the 8th at 2pm. I have also spoken to our shirt supplier who is hoping to be at the White Hart this week. See you all on Wednesday. David.H. Top | Home Andy Stanton 14/08/2014 Hi Everyone, So far I've posted the following:- Long Way To Tipperary Pack Up Your Troubles Bless 'Em All Run Rabbit Run Who Do You Think You Are Kidding, Mr Hitler I'm working on some others but I won't be posting them today! Top | Home David Hall 14/08/2014 Thank you Andy. I have just spoken to Wendy Pease of "The Song Birds" and after some discussion agreed that we would do a 30minute slot when they have a break. They will be singing much earlier songs than we have planned so I think we could include one or two of the above songs( given the time to rehearse them) but focus our efforts on the songs we have been rehearsing so far. I will do a suggested play list in the next few days. In the meantime thank you all for Wednesday I really enjoyed myself, so I hope you did. Thank you Andy again for sorting out the overhead projector it does make life simple! David. H. Top | Home Andy Stanton 15/08/2014 I've made three more additions to the war song collection. 1. One Staff Officer jumped right over the Other Staff Officer's Back This is an ANZAC song and was featured in Oh What A Lovely War. (see clip) 2. Never Mind A ironic little number also for OWALW (see clip), and finally 3, When This Lousy War is Over Also from OWALW. I think this last one would be a good one to end on. I don't think we should attempt the arrangement in the clip. Sung straight it would still be a powerful little number. I Don't Want to be a Soldier was also featured in Oh What A Lovely War but they sanitised it a little from the original music hall version (it had been a monologue). I too have missed out the more risqué verse. Top | Home JeffT 17/08/2014 Anybody else having trouble with 'Bless 'Em All' I just can't get it to sound right? Top | Home Andy Stanton 18/08/2014 Apologies. This was an error made during scanning that I didn't correct later. Try it now! Top | Home David Hall 19/08/2014 Hello again. Before Pat and I sail off into the sunset(well we can dream can't we?) I have put together the list we chose last Wednesday. Starting with the Happy band Song, I'm looking over a Four Leaf Clover, When the Red Red Robin, Me and my Shadow, Shine on Harvest Moon, Bye Bye Blackbird, Has anybody seen my Gal, Have you ever been Lonely, and Lily of Laguna. We should be able to include one or two from the list Andy posted on the !4th August. Anyway I will leave that for your good selves to choose. See you all on the !0th Sept. Have a good rehearsal. David. H. Top | Home Andy Stanton 20/08/2014 Apologies everyone I'm not too well and I am not going to be able to make the group this afternoon. Nevertheless |I urge you to turn up and use it as we said we would, as a workshop to look at techniques etc. and an opportunity for some jamming. See you next time when we are going to practice our scales! Top | Home |
