The set Lists for this coming Wednesday (6 May 15) are published in the Set List Page.  Please note that there are 2 lists (I couldn't get them all in one) and they will hopefully be the songs for the Long Bennington gig on Tue 2 June.  If anyone can't print/download a copy of the song sheets please let me know and I'll bring them one on Wednesday.

Band BBQ.  Thanks to David N the Balderton Scout Hut and ground has been provisionally booked  for this event on either Sat 15 Aug or Sun 16 Aug PM from lunch time onwards.  The date selected will be that which suits the majority of members.  More details to follow but I would be grateful if you could let me know which date you prefer.
Bob, just letting you know the Sunday would be better for me. thankyou. Jackie

The Framework 5k Colour Runga Run.
This apparently is a charity event being organised by Framework to raise funds to support homeless and vulnerable people in the local area and takes place on Sat 8 Aug at Kelham Hall & Country Park between 11.00am and 1.30pm.  The organisers are hoping to give the event a bit of atmosphere by asking local musicians/bands if they would perform around the route or/and on the main stage outside Kelham Hall at the finish. We won't have to do the run!
I have contacted the organisers and told them I will let them know after it has been discussed at the next band meeting on 15 Jul.  If you are interested please let me know on or before that date.
Further details about the event can be found on www.frameworkha.org/rungarun.
Ref  Runga Run I will be away on the 15th when you discuss this. I do not want to do it. I can think of better things to do than "potentially" getting covered on coloured paint powder.
jefft - 04-07-15

Noted Jeff.  Do you really think that I would do it if there was any chance of anyone getting daubed?  However, we are a democratic group so it's up to the people to decide.

bob cawson - 04-07-15

Re: the fun run, I know little about the Framework organisation but what are we doing if we cannot support local charitable events like this? Count me in Bob.

Apologies Bob, I cannot attend this one, I am at a wedding. Regards Jackie

For those, like me, who knew nothing of this registered charity and may wish to find out more then details can be found on www.frameworkha.org.  It is a housing association for the homeless across the East Midlands.

I have just placed the play list for this coming Wednesday in the "Set Lists".  All have been chosen by the "Random Selector"!

If you are attending the BBQ on the 16th please bring along your Fiver(s) as I want to get the money to David N.  Thoughts on the Nottinghamshire County Show invite would also be appreciated.

Christine sends her thanks to those who sent "get well soon" messages.

How Long Blues Ver 2
This is a different version to the one Jeff posted, but it is the version David McKenny brought to the group last week. We did a quick arrangement around it.
The narrative of this version is not nearly as complicated.  Actually it only has two verses to the five choruses.  The verses are so easy to remember, and that is the joy of this version.  With very little effort you could be PLAY IT WITHOUT A SONG SHEET. Wouldn't that be cool?
In other version I would suggest substituting F7 with Fm throughout.  It gives a more bluesy feel to the song.

Before I forget, I promised to post the address of the 1st Balderton Scout Hall for those members who do not know its location: Scout Hall, Queen Street, Balderton, NG24 3NR.
(Travelling from Newark, off London Road onto Main Street, pass St. Giles Church and the Library and Queen Street is on your right just past the Library. Scout Hall is approx 150yds down on the left.
Travelling from Coddington, Queen Street will be on your left but the junction is difficult to locate. If you pass the Library, you>ve gone too far!).

With ref' to our future amplificaltion:
I asked the question of Lyme Regis Luggers and this is a transcript of the reply.
I hope that this will give a heads up to those working on the problem.

luggersukulele
Hi Jeff,
Yes it is a bit of a minefield when trying to sus out which kit is best fit for purpose. I did go to a few places and we ended up with the following below. Originally we had 2x dynamic mic's and 4× cardioid  condenser mic's, the dynamic was not really any good unless you were almost eating it whereas the others pick up like more of a surround sound so you can have say three people stood a couple feet away from it and it will still pick up everything. So all six of our mic's are the latter. With that type they are more susceptible to feedback but as long as they are set up okay they seem to be the best option. The cause of feedback is best explained if you imagine a mic. Or a speaker or amp as sending out a torch beam, if they cross at any point you get feedback ( so I was told by the man who sold me the kit)The cardioid condenser mic's require phantom power which we supply from a six channel mixer desk, by Citronix, which is not too difficult to get to grips with. Or you can take a dynamic mic. From the active speakers but they will have to be the battery powered type.  It takes about twenty minutes to set up so we only use it when we play for about an hour otherwise it is not worth the hassle, but we have people doing certain jobs and it is getting quicker to assemble.
I hope this helps. If you want direct advice you can speak to James at Harmony (01305 260360) music in Dorchester he does know his stuff and will advise you which system would be best for your personal use. You do not have to buy from him but he will tell you what you need and you can check the best source to supply you, I am sure it will be much cheaper in your area. The actual speakers, mic's, mixer, is not that expensive but when you add in all the other bits it soon mounts up. Good luck

Paul

01297 444580

The whole lot was approx £1200.
2 × 10" active speakers (mains powered with amps inside) 350watts max power, but will run at 150watts all day
2x Speaker covers (these stay on all the time to protect, a must really extra cost but worth it)
6 x cardioid condenser mic's
1x 6 channel mixer
6x Mic. Stands with booms
2x 12mtr. Speaker cables
6x mic. Cables

Yes, I'm not surprised. Sound engineering is not for amateurs. There is that difficulty in getting it right which increases exponentially with the number of people you are trying to amplify.  You also find it's horses for courses.  What works in a large hall will not necessarily work in an outside venue, and vice versa.

What we need is somebody who knows what they are doing and who is old enough to qualify for U3A membership.  How about a post card in the local music shop?

Hi Guys - Re BBQ
Me again? If people do not mind too much I propose we eat about 1>ish/1.30?
Give me time to prepare things etc. I will be at the hall from 10.30am so if
you want to start arriving just prior to eating or want to join me at 10.30, (I can make you a tea or a coffee), and you can just fiddle around! sorry, wrong instruement. It really does not make any difference to me.
The wearing of either Scout or Guide uniform is optional. (come on own up, who is an ex scout or guider?).
Sorry, my guide uniform is too small and does not allow for stretching!

Will my brownie uniform do?

Hope everyone enjoyed Sunday.  Good weather, excellent food and well organised. Just put tomorrow's play list on the site - all songs taken from those suggested as contenders for inclusion in the programme for the County Show next year.  It has also been suggested that it would be good if we could fit it another practice session each month, preferably in a larger venue where we can set up in a more organised fashion.  I have the offer of Balderton Church Hall (venue known to a lot of the band) on a Wednesday PM (£14 for 2 hours) or a Thursday PM (Not really suitable for a number of the group).  Awaiting responses from a couple of other venues. Would appreciate your views tomorrow.
Re: Larger Rehearsal Room

Hi Bob, Sorry couldn't make it yesterday. I am back home, but now laid-up with a chest infection (aah, there, there I hear you say!)

Re: Larger Rehearsal Room: - It has to be said that one or two of us do like a beer, glass of wine or even a coffee at our uke sessions.  I do know that the Flying Circus would be delighted to accommodate us in their upstairs (large) concert room free of charge (the landlady Heidi grilled me when I was at the bar with a ukulele bag on my back).  Also, as amplificaton is used there regularly, we might be able to get some help and/or advice.  Might that be an option?

Hello everybody,

There is a new feature on the website.

I have given up the uneven struggle of suggesting that the group uses the song sheets compiled on this site, and instead I have designed a new page called 'Other Song Sheets'.
Unfortunately it only takes pdf files but that will still deal with a lot of the stuff that now turns up at the group.  A feature of this page is that there is a download button which works on the same basis as the main list.  It will download all the pdfs to your tablet or phone which means that you have access to all of it even when you can't get wifi.

What I need now is for people to upload their favourite song sheets.  The instructions of how to do this are on the page.
Will you credit it?
The Other Songs page is up and running no more than two hours and I find that I have to go into source code and make corrections because it appears that somebody can't read simple instructions even when they appear in block capitals.

THIS PAGE ONLY UPLOADS PDF FILES. I.E. THOSE FILES THAT HAVE THE EXTENSION NAME '.PDF'

I have now altered the code so that onenote files are filtered out...

... but I ask you.  Was I being vague with he instructions?

I've made a respectable stab at adding song sheets to the 'Other Songs' page.
Over to you lot now.

NOTE the program does not allow the duplication of song names, so if you want to post another version of a song you need to change the name slightly. i.e.:-

'My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean'
'My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean Ver 2'

Have a look!

As a bit of fun it has a lot going for it.  It's loud and it involves everybody.

It's not meant to be a performance and thank God for that.

It is incredibly scrappy.
Although the underlying beat is solid and consistent the singing is not.
If they were to do this as a performance I would want to see something of an arrangement.

Also note.  Everybody's reading the words.

Just a reminder that this Wednesday is a normal band meeting.  I've put a set list on the site that contains some possible contenders for the County Show programme.  There should also be time for those individuals/small groups who wish to play their choice(s)or to have a go at some of the new ones we played last week.

Mods to song, Added (over you), removed the starting "The" from same section, added words to the whistling section (in grey) for those of us that are musically challenged. Changed the single G to a G7.

Hi Jeff,
Your amendment missed out a word - It should read "Cry over you" on both occasions in the responses.  I will leave it to you to make the change as my computer skills are almost non-existent.

Thank you, interestingly the only person I could find, on a superficial search, that puts in the response is Mr Mc Cartney.
jefft - 27-08-15

Yes, but as we established yesterday the response serves the unintended purpose of helping people to get the right timing between the verses.
andy stanton - 27-08-15

Is that what we did. Well if Maca needs it who am I?

A follow-up to Jeff's posting of "Psycho Killer" above.

The original was by Talking Heads of course, but I take it we are all familiar with the version which was probably the inspiration for the performance in Jeff's clip . . .

The original and the UOGB version both have a great bass "lead" throughout.
