A new month, a new comments file. November's comments file was twice this size of the previous longest.  Anyway what used to be 21 shopping days to Christmas is now 24 shopping days to Christmas.

There's a small addition to the web site.
This is your opportunity to put together the virtual U3A Happy Band Set List.  To avoid controversy this is NOT the real set list because we haven't got one.  It's a speculation of what it might look like if we had a free for all.

Anyone can remove titles or add titles to this list, and that is what I would like you to do.  We'll run it for a couple of months, and see how it turns out.

Well Robin,  I've pulled yet one more virtual rabbit out of the hat.  If you log off now, and then log on again you will find you now have a choice as to whether you want the screen output to match the device you are using (the default option) or whether you always want the Windows style of display.

The things I'm expected to do!

Hello fellow...............er musicians

I have today spoken to a senior official of the Newark Working Mens Club re: possible use of their premises to check out PA system.  He is keen to let us do this on a Monday evening in January.  He will need to check with appropriate others, probably tonight so I will let you know the outcome as soon as I can.  I told him we would likely be amenable to playing a few songs for the enjoyment of anyone present and drinking a bit of their beer (not free) in return. I am already familiar with their beverages and they are acceptable and cheap (by present day pub standards).  For those that do not know the club is about 50 yards from Wellington Road and has ample parking. Good afternoon to you all.

Okay! I think I have lost the plot. I was at yesterdays session at the White Hart but for the life of me I cannot remember what I played. I have my three bits of music for playing with the >Singing For Fun> people, but can someone just gently nudge me in the right direction.....and supply me with the answer to "what are the pieces of music we are dong as the Happy Band for the U3A meeting"?. (I knew I shouldn>t have retired too early in life).

I now have confirmation from the Newark Working mens club that we can use their hall for testing PA in January.  Can Bob let me know if you would like me to accept their offer.  If we do then we would need to firm up the date when we would hope to be there.  In fairness to them it would be best to agree this asap. If anyone would like to see the Hall you can always go and see The Corndodgers (Andy's band) there next week.  Regards David

Thanks for the information David.  The retailer would prefer midweek as he is out most weekends setting up hired equipment for gigs and takes Monday and Tuesdays off in lieu.  However, I will contact him again this coming week and see if we can come to some arrangement/agree date time.  If he wants the custom he might accommodate us.

Hi guys - well it's 5:30am here. Been awake jet-lagged for 2 hours wondering what to do next - so you dropped unlucky!
- Roger - you asked on 4th December what the ukulele magazine was I had at the rehearsal
. . . It was actually a teach yourself book (at less than 10 it's only the same as 2 mags, and comes with a cd of the tunes - mainly good ones - and execise samples) . . .
. . . The book is "Ukulele Lessons for Beginners: Teach Yourself How to Play Ukulele" (Free CD included) (Progressive Beginner series).
I may have bought it at the music shop in Newark, but it is available online if they can't get it.

Hope the U3A Xmas gig went well on Thursday.

Not having been there, and missing the group already, I would quite like to play through the play-list for the gig - actually, between 3:30 and  5:30 this morning would have been good for that!

Did the final rehearsal throw-up any changes in how to play any of the songs we did the week before? (might come in useful for next year).

Description of a ukulele seen recently:
Features:
Color: Coffee
Size: 54 x 17 x 5.5 cm (L x W x H)
Fret: 12
Back material: Maple wood
Top material: Basswood
Note: 1. The Ukelele features 4 strings which are made of nylon.
         2. The Ukulele is in loose state before shipping to protect it from damage. Even if it is well adjusted, it will still in wrong tone after shipping. Then you have to tune it up again. Besides, the string elasticity does not reach saturation and needs to be tuned up repeatedly, which does not belong to product problem.
         3. The top of this product is made of basswood. Please read details about the material and size carefully while purchasing.

I have altered the intro to the Happy Band Song, and I think I've now got it right.
Imagine you are playing along to the first half of the verse:-

(C)We want to be happy
(G7)But we won't be happy
Till we make you happy (C)too.

Ok folks,
Here's a heart felt plea to all those who are adding new songs, and its about the amount of information you put in the title line and the authors line when adding the song.  Both of these fields are limited to 38 characters. In normal circumstances this should be more than enough.

Please keep the information in these two fields as spare as you possibly can.
The Title:  It is what it says on the tin.  Nothing more, nothing less.
The Author:  The tune and lyrics credit, and if you feel it necessary, the words 'adapted from'.

If you want to include the provenance of a song, or from which site you have taken it from, or who else has arranged it then there is plenty of space in the main text of the song to put it there.

I've just spent the an hour or so correcting a distortion to the database created by a field being longer than it should be.

Sorry Andy,

Using less words where more will fit, as you may have gathered, has never been my forte,

In the immortal words from my school reports: "Robin must try harder!".

(Actually, in the two reports following the above I had "Robin is trying" which was encouraging, so I made special effort, as did my teacher, which he demonstrated when he rounded-off this sequence of consecutive reports with the final comment "Robin is VERY trying" - I never did like history anyway!)

robin hardy
13/12/2014

By the way, that last comment is a true tale - the same teacher used to like saying "Hardy . . . Every time I open my mouth, some fool speaks" ... so that has'nt changed either!

Apologies for those who have received an email telling you that I have amended Happy Birthday.  I should have been working as an administator which puts the blocks on emails.

I wasn't in fact amending the song I was testing a change to the routine that adds songs to the play list.  There is now an additional dialogue box asking people to note the timing and the key of the song. eg. 3:4 Key: D

Sorry this a bit late in the day but I just had to thank you for not insisting I make a speech earlier today(I was not at my best by a long shot).I would have said how much I have enjoyed my two years at the helm. Not always plain sailing but an experience I won't forget in a hurry. I feel we have taken our little band out into the community and given pleasure to so many people. That in itself has made the effort so worthwhile and you were all part of that(Oh were we forty years younger we might have made the top ten by now) On a serious note I  would like wish Bob the best of luck and offer my support in the new year. In the meantime thank you all so much for my "medication" which I promise I will take religiously until I am either cured or needing the services of the A.A. So goodnight all I'm off to start the cure right now. Merry Xmas.

This should be of particular interest for Jeff.

I popped into the local music store here in Port Lincoln to get some lemon oil to clean the little pocket uke - and came out with one of these:

Gretsch G9101 NYC Camp Uke

. . . a modern reproduction of a model made between 1925 and 1935.

According to the shop owner, this turned up as a bonus item with a large order of Gretsch guitars. He said he wouldn't be able to sell it here at list price of about Aus$240, so he had priced it up at Aus $80 that is about 44.00 ! Naturally I came out of the shop with the uke and totally forgot the lemon oil I went in for!

Apparently, it was designed to be more resistant to changes in heat and humidity - hence the name "Camp".

Apart from being a round mahogany laminate body, it has a hardwood saddle and rosewood nut, so the sound is quite different, and not at all like a banjolele.

If you search the product in you tube, there are some demos of it, including the official Gretsch demo, where they start with an early recording of the original, followed by a professional player recreating the original music.

Perhaps a better demo of the range of sounds it can produce is in the Randees Music demo - it sounds really vintage in that.

Cheers, Robin

I've just added Octopus's Garden, a challenging little number penned by that legend of rock and roll, Richard Starkey.  I've posted it in the Key of E for the benefit of those who want to play along with the Beatles.

However, the Beatles had the knack of making the simple complicated.  E is a sod of a key to play on a ukulele.  I've used the transposer and converted to D which is better, and then to C which is the easiest.  Give it a try (PLEASE DO NOT USE THE SAVE OPTION ON THE TRANSPOSER)!  If there is a consensus on changing they key I will do so.

Well, it seems like this thing keeps on growing and growing.Jeff pointed out that some people's email firewalls might reject  one to one (121) emails generated by the system.  So what I have done is made the whole thing so it works on site.

If you want to send a 121 message to somebody then they will have their attention drawn to that message the next time they log in.  It will be there telling them how many unread messages they might have waiting for them.

It really is as simple as that.  Don't be alarmed if you haven't got a link to your messages.  All that means is that nobody hasn't sent you any yet.

Why do I bother with this?  Well, looking back at all the previous months' message boards I noticed a tendency for people to conduct 121 conversations on the comments page.  This is an attempt to meet that need.
