Just a note about passwords and usernames.

I've had a number of emails from folk wanting reminders about their passwords, so I'd like to draw everybody's attention to the 'log in' page. At the foot of the log in page are two links, one is to change your password (not to be recommended unless you want to be shut out of the comments page) and the other is in case you have forgotten your username or password. Click on this second one and follow the instructions and it will send you an email with your username and password.

The email you're asked about is the same email this message was sent to.

Ok, I've posted a much simpler version of Happy Days Are Here Again.  I wondered if there was a role for a fairly anarchic rendition with the use of kazoos during the instrumental.

HI Everyone,
I'm doing a bit of preparation for the improver's group next Wednesday (14th Jan).
We can get a bit more out of it by doing a bit of preparation beforehand.  First please download Improvers Group 14th Jan Agenda and have a look at it.  You will also need the special arrangement sheet I have worked out for "You're Sixteen", Arrangement For Youre Sixteen.

Please look at clip for this song to see what we are aiming at

... and finally if you want to do something for the open mike session now is the time to decide what so you can do a bit of practicing before Wednesday.Click to ENLARGE video clip

Hi All,

Hope all goes well with the "PA test" gig tonight.

Presumably you will have to take it in turns to drop-out of a number to see what it sounds like in the audience?

It will be interesting to hear what you think of it.

I would have liked to be there!

Have a good time - hope the PA works well.

Surprised no one took Jeff up on his expectation of jokes/comments about his "Pignose".

1. I'm not saying you have one . . but if  the ring fits . . .

2. Jeff - they're still making Pignose amps!  - so there's no need to have an old one in bits all over your workbench!

3.  Not sure the Pignose 5 amps will quite meet the bands need for a PA system!

4. Famous owners of Pignose amps:-

Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Eagles, The Who . . . and Jeff Taylor!

For those of you who are interested, the Pignose is now working perfectly on batteries still looking for a "quite" power supply. This acquisition does mean that my other small portable amp is now up for sale. I can't collect amps as well as ukuleles and two amps is enough for anyone (I think). by the way Robin you missed Clapton and Zappa.

For the benefit of those who are a little lost about all this loose talk about Pignose Amps I've included the following: Pignose G40V 40w Tube Amp in the library.

Hi everyone, a big Thank You for the card and messages, they are very much appreciated.
For those psychologists amongst you I have done the shock and denial bit now into rationalisation and acceptance. Hoping to be back strumming pretty soon but not enough puff for big band at present.
See you soon,
Tony

THE IMPROVERS' GROUP
On Wednesday as agreed we are going to do an arrangement of I want to be like you.  Again we'll have an open mike session, so brush up those songs.

I am planning ahead to 11th February.  If you look at the song I posted today  Those Were The Days, you'll see I'm planning a bit of fun for you.  The tune if not the words is from a Russian song.  I thought it might be fun to play it in the Russian style, all mournful and heroic.

Wednesday is too early to do it any justice.  What I would like you to do.  Is just practice it straight and become familiar with it.  Meanwhile I would also like you to practice strumming as though you were playing a balalaika.  To do this you will need a plectrum.  Here's what balalaika strumming sounds like

You may also notice that the clip I've put on the Those were the days file is a of a Russian woman singing it in Russian.

Improvers' Group

I've knocked together an arrangement for Arrangement For I Wanna Be Like You. Please download it and bring it on Wednesday.

If you also have a kazoo, that would be nice.  We've got some thinking to do about how we tackle instrumentals.  Is there anybody who would fancy their chances with a bit of scat singing?

I will be sending your details to some friends who will be watching you to make sure your acrylic is up to standard. (oi, has anyone seen me shirt, Can>t find me shirt anywhere).

Andy,

You asked for volunteers to do the cossack dance ŕ la Soviet soldier style - so I thought I'd give it a go to see whether I could do it.

All went well until about 3 minutes into the routine when I thought I would try that bit where the soldier moves in a wide circle facing out towards his colleagues, doing crouching alternate leg kicks as he goes.

I myself felt this section was a minor triumph of the folk-dancing arts, but Jean would like to know who's going to pay for the trashed motel room?

Perhaps I shouldn't attempt the routine with the Happy Band after all, as all those precious ukuleles would be in range.

Question?
Do words with Chord tabs constitute sheet music ?

Jacq
Top | Home

davidmc
28/01/2015

Good question Jacu, I visited one of the print shops in town to get some song sheets copied.  They said they are not allowed to copy sheet music for possible coptright reasons.  I pointed out that it has only tab and not formal music notation and they accepted this argument and did the job for me.  My personal view is that chord symbols with lyrics do not constitue sheet music.  Not least because there are many chord progressions which would fit with different tunes with different melodies.  Think of the blues/basic three chord pop song progression which is far from unique as it must be used in tens of thousands of ditties we know and love.  Others may have a different view.  Look forward to hearing other opinions, regards David

I think it will depend how sharp the complainants copyright lawyer is.  Intellectual property is not necessarily defined in terms of any particular format.  If a link can be made then there's scope for litigation.

Neither can it be as simple as banning the copying of all sheet music as a sure fire way of avoiding copyright infringement.  A lot of sheet music is about stuff that is now securely out of copyright and safely in the publc domain.

We had a productive session at the Improvers Group yesterday. I'm gratified at the number of people coming forward and chancing their arm at a solo performance during the open mike session.  It was also suggested that the group work on practicing without song sheets.

As a consequence of the arrangement session, I've updated Arrangement For I Wanna Be Like You Version 2.
