The set Lists for this coming Wednesday (6 May 15) are published in the Set List Page.  Please note that there are 2 lists (I couldn't get them all in one) and they will hopefully be the songs for the Long Bennington gig on Tue 2 June.  If anyone can't print/download a copy of the song sheets please let me know and I'll bring them one on Wednesday.

Band BBQ.  Thanks to David N the Balderton Scout Hut and ground has been provisionally booked  for this event on either Sat 15 Aug or Sun 16 Aug PM from lunch time onwards.  The date selected will be that which suits the majority of members.  More details to follow but I would be grateful if you could let me know which date you prefer.
Bob, just letting you know the Sunday would be better for me. thankyou. Jackie

I was wondering whether we could have a look at Daydream next time.  I have a proposed version:-
Daydream
which is in the key of F.  I am aware that there are other versions in other keys flying around.  I'm recommending this version because of the ease of chord changes and because it is a key I can sing in quite comfortably.

Evening all,
During the past 24 hours the band has been asked if we would be prepared to play at the following functions:

The Sconce & Devon Park Fest being held on Sun 5th July between 12.00pm & 4.00pm.  The park is located off Boundary Rd, Newark and I know is familiar territory to a lot of the band.  The request is for a 30 minute set.  If we can produce a viable number of players then David H and I will meet with the Park Ranger to discuss it further.

Newark Carnival Committee have been in contact and asked if the band would be prepared to play a 20 minute session of “happy lively tunes” at the end of the Carnival procession that this year is due to finish at the Market Square at 12.50pm on Sun 23rd June (The day after the TROC Gig).  The band would be one of about 4 varied acts that are being asked to perform outside the Town Hall.  Again, if we can produce a viable number of players then we will meet with the organisers to discuss it further.

I have promised both organisations our reply this coming Thursday.  We can discuss it at this Wednesday’s band meeting. However, if you are not attending the band meeting I would be grateful if you would let me know beforehand as to whether or not you are available/willing to participate in either or both of the functions.

I realise both are outside venues and this could pose a “sound” problem but this will be one of the questions I will be raising with both organisers.
Bob

Hi Bob I can do the Sconce and Newrak carnival but not the Troc. Regards Danid Mc
davidmc - 07-06-15

Sorry to be back so soon. Thinking of the outdoor gigs could we not perhaps pick a few songs which could tolerate a fairly high banjo uke input (obviously ukes would be there too)as it is the uke sound that gets blown away in the out doors more than the singing?  What do people reckon, we have probably got five or so uke banjo players.  Not only do we have to aim our set at the audience but also the environment we are playing in perhaps.  Just a thought regards David Mc.

PS I've got a new banjo, no self seeking there then!

davidmc - 07-06-15

Hi Bob I can do TROC and Carnival but not Sconce.
See you Wednesday.
Tony

tony dawes - 07-06-15

Maybe a little portable instrument amplification for the outside gigs :(
jefft - 07-06-15

Hi Bob,
Can't do TROC or Carnival.
Can do Park Fest.  Cheers, Robin

I can do the Troc and the Sconce Fest. Also will be late getting to rehearsal today.

Hi all,
The diary for Sunday's Sconce Fest has been amended.
I'm sure all concerned will know this, but Sunday's gig has been brought forward to 2pm  as per Bob's reply to my comment on 29th June.
(half an hour earlier than was scheduled, due to gymnasts deciding to skip the event)
Cheers, Robin
P.S. If they are expecting us to stand in for the gymnasts, I have been known to do the occasional forward roll (usually late on Saturday nights), but am not sure I can manage any beam-work whilst attemting to play the ukulele - any volunteers?

Sconce Fest.
For those attending this event on Sunday I have published the play list that, hopefully, reflects decisions made last Wednesday.  Please note I have published the "Last train to Newark" that includes David McK's request for the final chorus to be that of the original traditional song.
The set list is 13 numbers but we can always drop some if necessary.  I have included "Singing the Blues" so those who have Kazoos (and can play them!) could your bring them along together with your music, music stands, clothes pegs, sun cream, sun hats, water and wet weather gear!  (Latest BBC weather forecast for Sunday:  Feeling fresher with sunny intervals and showers, locally heavy.)
Don't forget 1400 hrs start for us.  Hope to see you there.
Bob

Senior moment Bob your rewrite was I'm sure was from The Train is Bound for Glory? Not Last train to San Fernando (Last Train to Newark) However for a future re-write who knows (Robin?)

The Framework 5k Colour Runga Run.
This apparently is a charity event being organised by Framework to raise funds to support homeless and vulnerable people in the local area and takes place on Sat 8 Aug at Kelham Hall & Country Park between 11.00am and 1.30pm.  The organisers are hoping to give the event a bit of atmosphere by asking local musicians/bands if they would perform around the route or/and on the main stage outside Kelham Hall at the finish. We won't have to do the run!
I have contacted the organisers and told them I will let them know after it has been discussed at the next band meeting on 15 Jul.  If you are interested please let me know on or before that date.
Further details about the event can be found on www.frameworkha.org/rungarun.
Ref  Runga Run I will be away on the 15th when you discuss this. I do not want to do it. I can think of better things to do than "potentially" getting covered on coloured paint powder.
jefft - 04-07-15

Noted Jeff.  Do you really think that I would do it if there was any chance of anyone getting daubed?  However, we are a democratic group so it's up to the people to decide.

bob cawson - 04-07-15

Re: the fun run, I know little about the Framework organisation but what are we doing if we cannot support local charitable events like this? Count me in Bob.
David H.

david hall - 04-07-15

Apologies Bob, I cannot attend this one, I am at a wedding. Regards Jackie

For those, like me, who knew nothing of this registered charity and may wish to find out more then details can be found on www.frameworkha.org.  It is a housing association for the homeless across the East Midlands.

Absolutely right.  "This train is bound for Newark" is published at the request of David McK and includes his wish to have the original chorus of "This Train" included.  Title is immaterial and only made up to make sure that individuals going to the Sconce turn up with the right version!  It will be deleted from the Master Play List immediately after the event.
Bob
Hi Bob
If there are more than eight of us on Sunday, May I suggest two rows of players to help consolidate sound? Keeping timings on a long row is very difficult--well even more difficult!!

What happens if it's chucking it ??   I don't mind getting wet but soggy music and a damp Uke is a no-no !!

Question for anyone:
How do you write 1234 to count in a piece of music that tells you what speed the count is?
Jacq

jacq - 04-07-15

And why would we delete it, could be a standard!!

jefft - 04-07-15

Thanks for your suggestion/concerns Jacq.  At last Wednesday’s meeting 14 members confirmed that they would be attending.  The organiser, ie the Park Ranger, has confirmed as requested by me that the requisite number of chairs placed in a tight horseshoe formation (probably 2 deep if all expected arrive) will be provided.   As cosy as we can be!
If I get to the event , fingers crossed that I will, I will be  setting up in the middle or thereabouts of this horseshoe my  2 portable speaker/PA  systems , with a number of mics, telescopice boom mic stands and a speaker stand.  I am using this as a trial to see whether they provide any amplification.  If they do all well and good, if not we have lost nothing  other the cost of a Deep Heat spray for the pain in my back from carrying the kit to/from the car.
As for the wet weather programme; the ranger has told me that in the event of mild inclement weather we could perform from inside a gazebo located near to the arena.  If it is "chucking" down then I will call ENDEX (that is Army parlance for we ain’t  going on!)
Hopefully see you tomorrow
Bob

bob cawson - 04-07-15

Jacq,
The usual way of indicating speed on a music score is to have the symbol for a crochet = the number of times it is played in a minute.  Imagine the 'd' as representing the score for a crotchet, then if the speed was 120 beats a minute it would look like 'd = 120'

Apologies to all concerned.

After months of waiting we have now had a firm offer on our house and we need to do some urgent house hunting in Sheffield.  Owing to the aforementioned funeral the earliest we can make is now Friday.  This means I can't make the postponed session either.

What I suggest now is that we reinstate the original time (Wed - 2pm), I  will prepare suggested arrangements for Swing Chariot and Stealing as promised and invite you all to crack on this coming Wednesday without me.

Here's the two arrangements I promised to be tried out at the improvers group:-
Sweet Chariot
This needs a volunteer soloist, and
Stealin
As I said, I won't be there myself, but you should be able to have a bit of fun with both these numbers.
I was going to make the Friday session but as this may not now take place, I shall not be attending. I will not be able to attend Wednesday either as I have made other arrangements for visits from family who are stopping off on their way to the northern regions of this delightful country of ours. So it looks like I will practice on my own by myself all alone. Is that sad? (No, please do not feel sorry for me........I can do it! I know I can).

With a mixed aged audience wouldn't it be wise to grab their attention by playing one or two more modern songs,eg Galway girl by Steve Earle or say Human by the Killers. I know I know blasphemous thoughts but I did say one or two.
I too will be absent from this Wednesday's improvers group.

Hi Folks.  Okay, I would not mind trying the solo (I can't practice too loudly at the moment, it is 5 to midnight and Liz is asleep in the next room - She gets uptight when I practice my recorder, never mind when I sing loudly!  See you tomorrow and hope to give Swing Low a go.

I'm sorry I couldn't be there on the 8th.  How did things go?
andy stanton - 11-07-15

Very well considering our handicaps. We concentrated on getting the tune to Chariots without words (tried to get consistent), Gordon made a valiant attempt at the solo verse and then we even tried a two line intro!!. (also tried two line intro to Happy band).
Stealing we just concentrated on timing and chord changes for the two lines with the rapid changes.

Help please from those of you who are NOT musically challenged.  I have been looking at a song which shows chords in C (for a guitar but I'm not proud) but it states capo on 3, the chords are C C4 Am F G4. Does this mean that if I don't use a capo, but I transpose up 3 semitones and play Eb Ebsus4 Cm Ab Bbsus4 that I am playing the same thing or is that too simple? How about if I just tune up 3 semitones?
Yes, that's right.  Also remember that chord shapes on a uke are a fifth higher a similar chord shape on a guitar, so if you play chords those same chord shapes on a uke without a capo, for a piece on a guitar that requires a capo in the first instance then you are effectively playing it a tone lower. (5 semitones difference on a similar chord shape minus 3 semitone for the capo placing).

I hope that's clear.

No scheduled "Happy Band" meeting this week being the 5th Wednesday in the month.  Play list for August will be published shortly.  Quick update on various matters:

Summer BBQ Sun 16 Aug:  Still awaiting replies (and money!) from a good number of members.  Grateful if you could confirm attendance by Thu 6 Aug at latest.

Scout Gala 13 Sep.  Apologies from David N but the Scout Gala scheduled for 13th Sep has been cancelled.  All the cubs and scout leaders are away at camp on that date!

Nottinghamshire County Show (Sat 14th/Sun 15th May 16).  Apparently the entertainments organiser for the show is planning to have "semi-professional" and "amateur" acts from various organisations/age groups from across the county appearing during the weekend in a marquee (PA system supplied.)  I have been asked if the band would be prepared to participate.  It would probably involve three 20 minute slots at various times during one of the days - the choice of day is ours.  If you are up for the challenge we have almost a year to put an act together on the other hand you might consider it a bridge too far!  The choice is yours!  More details on the 5th so please give it some thought before then so I can respond.
When you say "no scheduled meeting", is that no meeting or just one without a schedule?

jefft - 27-07-15

Hello Bob. It's yes to both BBQ and County show. I'M happy to jam on Wed. Chris.
chris - 27-07-15

Bob, I think I already said I can't get to the BBQ (wish I could).

No idea about my family commitments in May 2016 at the time of the County Show, though the date is free at the moment.

I can't be at the next couple of meetings - so re the show next year: I think its a good idea to aim to do that.  It would be good to broaden our repertoire, though, to appeal to a wider audience and maybe get them interested in the ukulele.

The improvers group has been doing a couple of arrangements which will be brought to the main group and could add variety to our performances - more can be done during the year to come!

The main thing I recon would be to get comfortable with working with amplification systems - where we all sit/stand in relation to the speakers (so the stronger players and singers are more prominent), and how we can best get to hear ourselves performing (monitor speakers pointing back at us???) So that we can be confident with our timing.

Cheers, Robin

Yes to the county show.

Rather than add more into Bob's wider ranging comment above - I'll join in on this of Rita's re "Jamming" this Wednesday.

Again, I can't be there, but can I just say how much I enjoyed last Wednesday's improvers group.

Thanks so much to Andy for leading it, and to the four others attending (Rita included) for making it one of the most productive and enjoyable ukulele sessions I have attended.

If Wednesday's session is half as good it will be great fun.

Enjoy!

Whilst away on the south coast I played with the Lyme Regis "Luggers" during one of their practice sessions. It was interesting that they as a group of players have the same problems that we have. (except there is no beer at their sessions). They have moved to amplification for the outside gigs. They have to cope with noise from beach, sea and gulls. They use a system that gives one mic between 2 or 3 players and having had a range of mics they are now moving to having all condenser mics, more expensive but the dynamic mics did not perform.

Andy, I am assuming that A#dim is the same as Bbdim? Is the chord shape published the correct one?
jefft - 30-07-15

Yes, that's a fairly valid assumption
For the avoidance of any doubt in future please note that the full chromatic scale on this website is as follows:-
Ab A Bb B C C# D Eb E F F# G
So if you see A# on any other site it is Bb on this one
Ditto Db and C#
Ditto Eb and D#
Ditto Gg and F#
Ditto G# and Ab

In addition For B# read C
For Cb read B
For E# read F
and finally for Fb read E
Now on top of that there's a host of different inversions for the chords we use so it please don't be alarmed if somebody elses A#dim does not look like our Bbdim.
Please be assured that I am wholly satisfied that our Bbdim is correct.

andy stanton - 30-07-15

Thank you for that, I have copied and printed the above for further study. I wish I had paid more attention to my music teachers. (come to think of it I wish I had had a music teacher).
So does that mean that the shape for A#dim/Bbdim is the same shape as C+5 (Caug)?

jefft - 30-07-15

A lot of the chord shapes on a four string instrument get duplicated (e.g. Dm7 and F). It all depends on the context in which they are played.
