Good evening all,We have been asked by the Long Bennington's Women's Institute if we would be prepared to play at their Birthday Party on Tuesday 2 June 2015 at Long Bennington Village Hall. The gig would be from 8.15pm to 9.15pm.  They would be happy with two 20 minute sets with a 20 minute break between during which we would be offered a "finger buffet". Please let me know by 1 April if you are willing to attend.Bob
Would have been willing as always, but unfortunately we are way that week.

For info here is an image of the Lincoln Green Ukulele Birthday Cake that we will be presenting to the Lincoln Ukulele Band at their Birthday Bash tomorrow.

Possible new gig.We have been asked if we would perform at The Troc Care Home, Beacon Hill Road, Newark on Saturday 20th June starting at 3.00pm.
The event is their Summer Hog Roast.  They would appreciate 2 sets of approximate 20/30 minutes each and as on our past visits to them they will feed us between sets.  They have always been good hosts and obviously appreciate what we do so it would be great if we could go.
To enable me to reply I would appreciate it if band members could let me know by this Thursday (23rd April) if you are willing and available to attend.

Finally the group has two black group Polo shirts available for anyone who would like one.  One is a size Large the other an Extra Large.  First come first served!

Now it's back to the sunshine and the gardening!Bob
Count me in

The set Lists for this coming Wednesday (6 May 15) are published in the Set List Page.  Please note that there are 2 lists (I couldn't get them all in one) and they will hopefully be the songs for the Long Bennington gig on Tue 2 June.  If anyone can't print/download a copy of the song sheets please let me know and I'll bring them one on Wednesday.

Band BBQ.  Thanks to David N the Balderton Scout Hut and ground has been provisionally booked  for this event on either Sat 15 Aug or Sun 16 Aug PM from lunch time onwards.  The date selected will be that which suits the majority of members.  More details to follow but I would be grateful if you could let me know which date you prefer.
Bob, just letting you know the Sunday would be better for me. thankyou. Jackie

We have a new feature to the website.
When you call up a song you get a grey menu box on the right hand side of the screen.
In that menu box you now get:-

PRINT  14 | 16 | 20 | 24 | 28

Click on any of these and you will get a display of what is going to be printed and also a print dialogue box.  The numbers indicate a choice of character size.  The default size is 16, but chose any of the others and the display will reflect the choice.

If you wish to go ahead you click on OK, and if you are not satisfied with the text size click on Cancel and you will be taken back to selected song where you can choose again.
Not that I print much, but I like it anyway.

Hi folks!

Owing to the swop we are having our improver's session this coming Wednesday (3rd June), then to fall back into sequence we should have improver's on it's regular slot (10th June) and then back to alternating weeks thereafter.

This would mean that we would have no less then three Improver's sessions in June to the one Band session, which strikes me as not being quite right.  Accordingly, I would suggest the following:
3rd  June: Improvers
10th June: Band Session
17th June: Band Session
24th June: Improvers
This is only an idea, but what do people think of it.
Good idea Andy.  This would allow 2 band rehearsals before the TROC gig.

I will go with Andy's idea. but more important news I will be back for next Wednesday.
Meanwhile I have been to Ronda (help me Ronda help help me Ronda) not a Beachboy in sight not even any Welsh just a load of Spanish and lots of beer. Followed up with a trip to The Alhambra, no films showing. Then Granada  and didn't see any TV studios. See you all soon

Strange, Jeff, I've had similar experiences (but fuelled by wine, not beer). . .
been to Annecy . . .  but it's a lake, and to Marseilles . . . but she doesn't, and now at
St Remy de Provence where Van Gogh spent a year in hospital . . . but there's no one 'eer!

Hi folks,
The Improver's Group were fairly busy yesterday, and came up with no less than three arrangements that we would commend to the rest of the group:-
1. Lazy River
2. Travelling Light
3. Dirty Old Town

I have amended these song sheets to include instructions on the arrangements.
Incidentally we now have a new arrangement on the site that allows arrangement notes.  These will always appear in boxes on the song sheets.
We need a volunteer for the solo part in Dirty Old Town.
I find it difficult to sing along while playing the Bass (although I am still practicing,if Jack Bruce can do it then so can I).

andy stanton - 04-06-15

Andy I have been trying Lazy river
Are the lyrics "Up a lazy river where the with me" correct?
J

Jeff,
Don't know where they came from!
Lyrics given to me by Tony for the extra verses for inclusion in the
draft and published were:  "Up a lazy river with me"

LB Gig.
Thanks to all those who attended.  It seemed to be appreciated by the WI members.  I expect we’ll get more feedback from LB resident band members!   Parental health problems have prevented me from looking at the video recording or having a quiet period to reflect on the evening overall.  Any comments you may have would be welcomed.  For those who I didn’t manage to tell at the Gig we received a donation of £50 for the performance

Troc Gig 22 Jun.
I have put a couple of lists for this event on the web site.  I have tried to keep the numbers (from which we will probably need 16 maximum) mainly short/cheerful/upbeat and that records indicate we haven’t played there before.  I would have liked to include a couple of “individual/duo” spots but some of the members involved in these aren’t attending the gig. However, if anyone else wants to step up to the plate or has any comments/suggestions for the performance please let me know.

Please be prepared to play these selections the next at the next band meeting (Wed 10 Jun)

Finally, if anyone is interested in attending then will be a “Fun/Strum” session tomorrow at the White Hart (1.00 to 3.00pm)
Bob

Hi Bob.  Is there any reason why Oh Susanne appears twice on the Troc 2nd set list?
andy stanton - 04-06-15

Silly me.  I meant "You are my Sunshine".
andy stanton - 04-06-15

We might want to consider it for the play list.

Evening all,
During the past 24 hours the band has been asked if we would be prepared to play at the following functions:

The Sconce & Devon Park Fest being held on Sun 5th July between 12.00pm & 4.00pm.  The park is located off Boundary Rd, Newark and I know is familiar territory to a lot of the band.  The request is for a 30 minute set.  If we can produce a viable number of players then David H and I will meet with the Park Ranger to discuss it further.

Newark Carnival Committee have been in contact and asked if the band would be prepared to play a 20 minute session of “happy lively tunes” at the end of the Carnival procession that this year is due to finish at the Market Square at 12.50pm on Sun 23rd June (The day after the TROC Gig).  The band would be one of about 4 varied acts that are being asked to perform outside the Town Hall.  Again, if we can produce a viable number of players then we will meet with the organisers to discuss it further.

I have promised both organisations our reply this coming Thursday.  We can discuss it at this Wednesday’s band meeting. However, if you are not attending the band meeting I would be grateful if you would let me know beforehand as to whether or not you are available/willing to participate in either or both of the functions.

I realise both are outside venues and this could pose a “sound” problem but this will be one of the questions I will be raising with both organisers.
Bob

Hi Bob I can do the Sconce and Newrak carnival but not the Troc. Regards Danid Mc
davidmc - 07-06-15

Sorry to be back so soon. Thinking of the outdoor gigs could we not perhaps pick a few songs which could tolerate a fairly high banjo uke input (obviously ukes would be there too)as it is the uke sound that gets blown away in the out doors more than the singing?  What do people reckon, we have probably got five or so uke banjo players.  Not only do we have to aim our set at the audience but also the environment we are playing in perhaps.  Just a thought regards David Mc.

PS I've got a new banjo, no self seeking there then!

davidmc - 07-06-15

Hi Bob I can do TROC and Carnival but not Sconce.
See you Wednesday.

Ok,
I've now updated the copy of Daydream that I put on earlier.  Having tried it out, it clearly has issues all of which I have corrected in the latest copy:-
Daydream
I can only imagine that the original copy on the internet was compiled by a shaved monkey.  This one scores in that
1.  It has less chords, and
2.  It works with the song instead of against it.
It is interesting that your sorted version has more in common with Richard Gee's offering than the one we did have (except the key)

Hi Andy,

(Sorry for all the posts, guys, I'm in catch-up mode)

Re: Daydream key and yodelling comment above.

As you know, I struggle even more with the singing than the ukulele playing, and as I see it, we are actually using the ukulele as a rhythm instrument to support the singing . . . so might it be possible to include the first sung note alongside the key so that I and any other strugglers could at least have a shot at getting ONE note right, with the following ones a closer representation of the tune than they might otherwise have been??

I suppose this would also help the singers adjust to a new key too, if they are used to singing the song in a different one.

Just a thought.

Robin

Yes, it's a good thought.

When I have a evening with nothing else to do I'll amend all 211 songs so that the first note is given.

andy stanton - 08-06-15

I knew you'd like the idea!

Now here's the thing, perhaps we don't need to update all the back-catalogue straight away, and there are one or two musically-minded people lurking in the group, so it doesn't have to be you to update them.

Of course I don't know how much of an imposition simply adding the option would be - you only need to say if it's not on.

If not too onerous, how about putting the facility there and using it for new songs and arrangements, then see if anyone is interested in going through the ones we perform at gigs and entering those in - it's not that many.

Perhaps someone reading this will volunteer???

The rest could be done as and when we next play them - or just left as we don't play them often enough.

Might that be do-able?

Maybe then, when practicing, we could practice all hitting that note before we start, because for me, and I suspect a few others, at the moment its a shot in the dark.

After all, it is a song, with ukulele accompaniment.

With very best wishes and highest regards,

Robin

I was wondering whether we could have a look at Daydream next time.  I have a proposed version:-

which is in the key of F.  I am aware that there are other versions in other keys flying around.  I'm recommending this version because of the ease of chord changes and because it is a key I can sing in quite comfortably.

I've put in the Set List a 'Sconce Fest Selection' for this coming Wednesday's session.  From this list we will need to agree 10 numbers for our performance this coming Sunday, 5th July.
"This Train" how about adding an appropriate verse between choruses (like normal songs):

This train don't carry no smokers, this train;
This train don't carry no smokers, this train
This train don't carry no smokers,
Two bit liars, small time jokers,
This train don't carry no smokers, this train

jefft - 29-06-15

Hi Bob,
The last mention of the Sconce Fest I can see says they were looking for a 30 minute slot between 12 and 4pm - what time is the gig, and is it standing/sitting/strolling (if the latter, I'll bring my nordic-walking poles)
Cheers,  Robin

robin hardy - 29-06-15

Robin,
We were scheduled to play at 1430.  However, my conversation with the organiser this afternoon reveals that the gymnasts due on before us have dropped out and we will start at 1400.  Seating is being supplied for the 14 who have said they will attend - no need for your Nordic-walking poles then! More appropriate would be sun hats, lashings of sun cream and water!
