MEMBER'S COMMENTS MARCH 2015

At the last Wednesday Happy Band Meeting I mentioned that the Lincoln Ukulele Band had invited us to a uke “festival” in April. I have now received further details and a formal invite for us to attend.

The Lincoln Ukulele Band who formed last April are composed of forty members of all ages, most of whom had never played a uke before. They play for fun, but also voluntarily entertain at local care homes and play at various community functions.

To celebrate their first birthday they are hoping to organise a one-day uke 'festival' on a Sunday in or around April at Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln.  They are aiming to attract around 200 people by inviting the local folk clubs/uke groups (Lincoln, Grantham, Spalding, Newark, Sleaford, Gainsborough, Oakham, Horncastle and Scunthorpe) and the day would involve singarounds, club spots, workshop/s, instrument swap stall, raffle, refreshments and a concluding concert with invited band/guests.

They have provisionally booked a workshop from Phil Doleman (Ex Re-entrants) and are hoping to keep the cost of the day to well below £10.

They are presently considering April 12th or 19th as the possible date.I have replied to their invite saying that some of us would be pleased to attend. If you wish to go I would appreciate it if you would let me know.
I am interested in Lincoln Uke Fest. Thought you might want those interested to sign up by "replying" to your announcement, Bob, so don't count me twice (also in "comment" below).
robin hardy - 08-02-15

Okay Bob you can count me in for the above shindig. Unfortunately I cannot make it to rehearsal this week but will see you at the next session.
david hall - 02-02-15

I am also interested in this event, regards David
davidmc - 03-02-15

I am in anyway, being a member of the Lincoln Ukulele Group.  The more the merrier.  Will is a good musician and the event promises to be quite an occasion.  The Bishop Grossteste is quite a large complex and, even if the weather lets us down I am sure that we will still be able to go ahead indoors.
gordon eden - 03-02-15

I'm interested subject to confirmation on the date.
andy stanton - 09-02-15

It all depends on the date. At this time my diary is clear....I will be bringing my other halfs, (the wife and the uke), if that>s okay?. Sounds like to be a very good day.
I can offer a lift.

david n - 10-02-15

To celebrate their first birthday The Lincoln Ukulele Band (LUB) has organised a free party for all ukulele players in Lincolnshire & surrounding counties.  It will be held on Sunday afternoon - April 19th from 1pm to 5pm at Bishop Grossetest University, Longdales Rd, Lincoln LN1 3DY. There is ample free parking and the college refectory will be open for refreshment throughout the afternoon.  LUB will also be providing free cake!!

Although still to be finalised the afternoon will consist of:
Singarounds - from a specially collated songbook which will be emailed to us at the beginning of April.  Any suggestions for inclusion in the songbook to me by the 23rd March please.
Groups Spots - we should be prepared to sing a few of our favourites.
Individual spots - any individuals or small groups will be encouraged to get up and perform.
Workshops - Phil Doleman will be leading a 60 minute performance/workshop during the afternoon.  Also arranged is a workshop for those beginning to play the bass ukulele and another for complete beginners.
Uke swap stall - take any uke you don't need anymore.  Attach a label around the neck with a realistic selling price and LUB will do their best to find it a new home (voluntary 10% commission to LUB).
Possibe trade stall - this is is yet to be confirmed.
Raffle - for at least one (maybe two) ukuleles, tuners, shakers plus more.
Refreshments - unfortunately LUB are unable to provide refreshments (due to the booking conditions) so will rely on the University Refectory (just next door).  Prices are reasonable and at least LUB can supply a slice of free birthday cake.

LUB would like to make this an annual event aiming for a whole day with extra workshops and perhaps a concert at the finale.

14 of us indicated that we would participate - if there are any more who would like to go please let me know ASAP. Remember it's free!!

Thanks to Robin for raising this with me.
If you use a tablet or an smart phone to read this site and you have opted for the Windows Display you will have experienced one or two operating difficulties. These can be dealt with by the way you navigate the site.

The Android operating system creates a new page every time you click on a link, unlike the MSDos Windows version which overwrites the your present page with the new stuff.  What this means is that your device gets cluttered with your recent browsing history.

This does not present a problem for the Android version of the site because this was designed to work on Android.  You get back to main menu by click on the Escape key. The Esc key closes the page and reverts to the original menu.

If you have the Windows display on your android device then always use the Esc key to return to the home page.  So the simple rule is always go back to the home page by clicking the Esc key and then make a selection from the menu on the home page.
Good - all is well.

It's just midnight here, and I have just returned from a uke group meeting at Tumby Bay - the next town up the coast - 30 miles away.  Had a good time.
I suppose you will be about to start a session at the White Hart - so have a good one!  Back at the end of next week.

After the discussions/comments/performance at last Fridays meeting I have thought it best to revise the play list for the Lancaster Grange Gig - this revision is published as the 4 Mar 15 Set List.  As we only have this week and one other meeting before the gig I would like, to check timings etc, to run through the set list, warts and all, as if it were the performance.  In addition to the Set List we should have time to try out "Messing about on the river", "Those were the days" (normal version!)(both requested by Roger),  "I'm getting married in the morning" and "The Dead Wood Stage".  The latter two are possibilities for the 16th April gig.  For those who weren't there last Friday copies of the song sheets will be available on Wednesday.
Bob
Now I’m confused, whilst going through and checking my copies that are on the set list for 4 Mar 15 and potentially Lancaster Grange Gig  to make sure I have the correct versions.
My digital copy of Oh Susanna is labelled 25/02/15 (this seems to be the same date that I downloaded it)
The set list has the date as   04/02/15
The play list has the date as 04/02/15
If you open it from the play list it is labelled 04/02/15
If you open it from the set list it is labelled 02/03/15

jefft - 02-03-15

Problem half resolved, anything opened from the set list created on the 2/3/15 is date stamped with that date (2/3/15)
jefft - 02-03-15

Sorted!
andy stanton - 03-03-15

Thanks Andy, the date stamps were giving me a headache

Looks good to me Jeff, though the more I play it the more I am inclined to finish with a slow repeat of the last line( of the second chorus). Perhaps we can decide at our next rehearsal.
david hall - 06-03-15

Is there enough verses or should I add others?
jefft - 06-03-15

I know there are other versions of this song but my favourite is the David Alexander one which I think says it all, so I feel it should be left as posted.
david hall - 08-03-15

Leave it I will then, had to write some of it by hand, does it play OK?

I was just going through the set list and got to Midnight Special, and thought pity about that, I wonder why it didn't work? So, I had a listen to our video clip (John Foggerty) then looked at the full Creedence version. Got hooked and listened to Leadbelly then Lonnie Donegan and others.None of the above break between verse and chorus and none have tacet starts to the lines, apart from the classic Creedence/Foggerty Intro.I tried it, substituting C for the tacet sections. Worth a try!
Bring it to Improvers  on Wednesday.  Let's see if we can make it work.
andy stanton - 10-03-15

What about 2 singers on each verse and les tout ensemble on the chorus. No breaks between verse and chorus but tacit remaining.

Hi folks, if you are coming to improvers tomorrow then please download Improvers Group 11-3-15 and Those Were The Days - Russian Arrangement (you won't find that version on the play list).

Please also bring "You're Sixteen", "I Wanna Be Like You" and "Midnight Special".  For the singing without sheets you won't need 'Living Doll', 'Colours' or 'Singing The Blues', but it might be an idea to practice them.
Well that's a B'. there's me practising Happy Band Travelling Light  Have you ever and Dirty old Town, without "music"!! Getting the tunes some or the time but now I'm forgetting the words!! Such is life.

For those who intend coming to the White Hart this Friday please bring the songs on the set list for that date plus those for the 18th.  As agreed last week no intention to play them all only those we were having particular trouble with.  Might have a couple of others to try - sheets will be available.

At the improver's group on Wednesday we spent a short while trying to work out the difficulties we have had with Midnight Special.  I'm grateful to Jeff for the work he has done on this.  We concluded that the difficulty with this song (Once again) is that people approach this song with different set ideas as to how it is to be handled (the tacet at the beginning of the chorus and the verse a la Creedence Clearwater Revival, for example).

In fact if we sing without the fancy trimmings, and play C instead of the tacet it becomes fairly straightforward.

We also note that many performers run straight from the chorus into the verse.

Do these two things and we might solve the problem.
If the band agrees with this then we have to amend the listed copy we have, and while we're about it we want to add a short introduction.

On a completely different track we had a splendid recital of Those Were The Days as it might be sung by the Red Army Choir.  More on this later!

My latest little coup in my career as your resident web nerd is that I have worked out how to access all the playlist while you are off line.

I’ve noticed that many of the group have acquired tablets in order to read song sheets.  That’s all very well except that there’s not always sufficient WiFi (if any at all), and that when this happens the things are next to useless for our purposes.

Not any more. (Pause for cheers and applause).

On the right of your screen just under Parish Notices we’ve sprouted a friendly green button with the title ‘Download Songbook’.  It does precisely what it says.

Click on this and you get the complete up to date set of our play list ON ONE FILE downloaded to your download area.

It’s good isn’t it?

What you do is you make sure you have an internet connection and then hit the friendly green button.  What I have done on my tablet is I have opened up a new directory titled ‘A Ukulele Songbook’ (this puts it at the top of the list of directories) and I transferred the file (called ‘Home’) from the download directory to the ‘A Ukulele Songbook’ directory.  You open the file by clicking on it twice and in the settings you create a link to the home page.

Now if you wander abroad out of a Wifi rich zone you can click on this page and still get access to the full list.

Please note, that as it is a large file it does take a bit of time to load. Be patient, and don’t start reclicking just because it’s taking longer than you want.  All this does is successfully send you back to the queue.

I’m working on more comprehensive instructions about  how to do all this for those of you still blessed with a naive appreciation of IT. Watch this space.

Another alternative is to convert the play list to PDF and down load to a memory stick and shove that in the device when required, it saves clogging your device.
Hoping to see you all soon.
Tony

tony dawes - 19-03-15

Playlist  downloaded to Nexus, not exactly as described for me, but it is there now if I need it. Thanks
jefft - 19-03-15

I thought this means would save you the tedious business of downloading 200 plus pdf files. They all come in one lump, and I promise they are all bang up to date.

The file is date stamped, and every time a song is added or updated the file is amended.

andy stanton - 19-03-15

Good point Andy, they will also be the latest version, very clever, I didn't think of that! Thanks Andy
tony dawes - 19-03-15

Yes, the Oakham Group have a similar system and I downloaded the whole songbook in one go, brilliant.  Like you say, it takes a while but it saves a lot of typing and amending.  I do not have a problem with working away from a wi-fi connection but one snag I found, several months ago at Newark, was that having downloaded all the files  When I first brought my iPad to Newark (I did not log in to the pub wi-fi) I switched on and opened the files and - zilch! I asked someone else and was told that I had to open each file whilst at home and then it would work - it did, and still does, even if I am in the middle of a field, nowhere near my internet.
I see no problem as long as any amendments/updates are automatically added (and reach our devices, when within internet range of course). I have already loaded the existing songs so no saving for me there but any new songs and amendments will gradually take over in the future, thanks.

gordon eden - 19-03-15

I think automatic updates to "your" file maybe a bit much to expect.
jefft - 19-03-15

Hi again Andy, the friendly green button seems to have disappeared!
tony dawes - 19-03-15

Hi Tony.  I don't understand where your green button has got to.  Mine still is there and happy to be there.  It is possible that your device is referring to an old version in its cache.  Try clearing history and have another go.

Hi Jeff! I described it as a coup, not a miracle.  If you look at the button you will see there is a date explaining when the downloaded file was updated.  At the moment ithas 19th March 2015, the date I initiated this application.  From now on whenever a song is added or amended this file is updated and the date changed.  Yes, it is not automatic in that it won't download itself to your tablet when you are doing something more productive, but it will tell you if your version has been superceded in order that you can download the latest version.

admin - 19-03-15

YES, my reply was (perhaps on your behalf) in answer to Gordon.
jefft - 19-03-15

Thanks Andy, the little devil was hiding somewhere and has now reappeared.
I hope that the gig went well today.

Ok, I'm going from strength to strength now.  If you click on the download button what you now get is a ZIP file.  A ZIP file is a special sort of download file that contains all the individual songs and a special index file to help manage them all.

What you do with the download file, where it lives on your device and what you do with it differs from device to device.  I will give some guidance in the next few days, and I'll make that available on the web site library.

Hi Andy I have removed the history, What page is parish notices on?
No sign of a green button.
Roger
I was going to suggest that you sign on, but you must have signed on to have sent me this message.  So I'm going to make one or two speculative propositions 1. You are using either a tablet or a smart phone and 2. You haven't indicated a preference to have the Windows display when you logged on.

If this is the case I suggest you log off and then log on again but this time click on the button indicating that you want the windows display.

Good evening all,
We have been asked by the Long Bennington's Women's Institute if we would be prepared to play at their Birthday Party on Tuesday 2 June 2015 at Long Bennington Village Hall.
The gig would be from 8.15pm to 9.15pm.  They would be happy with two 20 minute sets with a 20 minute break between during which we would be offered a "finger buffet". Please let me know by 1 April if you are willing to attend.

Would have been willing as always, but unfortunately we are way that week.

Better late than never.

For those who are intending to turn up tomorrow at 1.00pm I've just put a set list on the site.  It includes the couple we messed up at Lancaster Grange and also those that might be included on the 16th Apr.  Other points are:

I will show the DVD of the band's performance at Jackie's birthday party.  This Newark premier will be shown again next Wednesday.

I have now got a digital recorder that is allegedly ideal for recording band rehearsals.  If I can fathom out how it works I'll trial it tomorrow and next Wednesday so that we all hear how good we sound!

It has been suggested that we hold a Band Summer BBQ.  We have a volunteer cook or should that be chef - thanks David N!  All we need do now is to find a suitable date, a suitable venue - anyone live in a stately home or have a large garden and would be prepared to host it?  Also indent for good weather. Please let me know if you think it is a good idea.

Finally I've received, via a very convoluted email trail, a request asking us to play at a WI party at West Bridgford on 27 Jun 2016.  Talk about forward planning - more details when they reply to my email.
