THIS WEEKS BAND MEETING.  Please note that this week’s meeting (Wed 31 Aug 16) will be held at the Balderton Scout Hut, Queen Street, Balderton NG24 3NG and NOT at Oscars pub.  I will be taking the PA equipment.  This will be the last band meeting before the Allington Summer Fete gig on Sunday 11 September.  Tomorrow’s play list is as published for the Allington gig although, due to the limited numbers going to Allington, this will be reduced somewhat.

REQUEST TO PLAY AT THE LIONS SOUTHWELL MINSTER CAROL SERVICE – EVENING OF 17TH DECEMBER.  I’ve thanked the Lions for their invitation to play at this event but have told then that we are not available.

SHERWOOD FOREST ART AND CRAFT CENTRE CHRISTMAS WEEKEND (26 & 27 NOV BETWEEN 11AM AND 4PM)).  I have received the following email from the organisers of this event:
“Each Christmas we have a weekend when we celebrate Christmas.  We strive to given an inspirational experience to our customers with traditional entertainment by local artists/performers.  Lynn Preece (Sherwood & Districts Art Funds Department) has put the Newark Ukulele Happy Band forward as a result of our performance at the Sconce Festival which she said was brilliant.  Is there any chance you have a Christmas set that you could showcase at our Christmas event.  Lynn spoke so highly of you and you seem perfect to make our event go with a “swing”.  We would love to hear from you (please include your charges in the reply) especially if you are able to attend on either day or both days.  We do like it if our artists/performers are in period costume as this does help to make such a lovely atmosphere, (we can help with this)”

I think it could be an interesting event and I’m particularly keen that we should try and support it if we can – especially as we’ve been highly recommended by the individual who was behind getting us the grant from the Council Arts Department.  Please let me know if you agree and are prepared to play and let me have your preferred date (or both dates if you are keen to do that.)  I have sent the organisers are holding reply saying that I will let them know of our availability soonest.

Hi Bob, I,ll be there, hopefully. I already have my costme it doesn't require tights but what the hell!.

This is an interesting little clip.

There is an evident difference in quality, but perhaps this is only half the demonstration that was required. What we don't have is a complete beginner trying to get a tune on both. It's not very difficult to have a good player make a poor instrument sound good, but does it follow that a good instrument makes a poor player sound good?

I have views on this.Click to ENLARGE video clip

36 Ways To Become A Better Ukulele Player
This has to be worth a look,  if this link fails, it is in the library.
Jeff
Some useful tips, here.  There's an obligue reference to the need to practice in one of the points.  It can't be stressed sufficiently.
I'm not sure it necessary to move away from what you know.  Sounder advice would be to explore different ways of playing what you already know.

andy stanton - 06-11-16

Good sound advise, useful for everyone that wants to improve.
tony dawes - 07-11-16

So familiarity with an arrangement bit like how we play Green door and Rock around the clock.

Over the years I've tried to make this website as functional as possible. From time to time people have asked me to twitch it so it works a little more effectively, and as far as I can I oblige.

A couple of weeks ago Jeff asked if it was possible to embed external links into comments, and the answer was yes, but it may take a while.

So here's an example:-

A link to Got A Ukulele website.

You may have noticed that any sort of link is only available if you are opening a new topic.  There's a reason for this, but it's fairly complicated.

DIARY : LIST DIARY ENTRIES - 2015 & DAY

Please is it possible for someone to remove all (or stop) the 2015 entries appearing in-between the 2016 dates, and have the correct day against the date of the event?

Stephen

That should do it.

When I have a moment or two I'll programme a way of automatically removing historical content from the diary.

andy stanton - 15-11-16

Andy,

Thanks.

Stephen

I've just added the 3 set lists for the 26th Nov at Sherwood Arts Centre.  These tunes have been "chosen" by 3 members of the group.  Songs from these lists will be used at all the events between now and the 26th so please bring along all the relevant song sheets tomorrow.

I'm looking at this web site, because although much of it is functional (people do use it) a lot of it seems to be redundant.  It also looks cluttered.
I don't mind putting the time aside to devise something else, but I would need your help to do that.

1.  I need to know what you like about the present site.
2. I would need to know what you don't like.
3. I would like to know if there are things we could add, and if there are things we could lose.

What I would plan to do is to develop the site separately from the main site, so that you wouldn't get to use it until it's done.  I'd put a link in so you could see how it was developing but you wouldn't be able to post anything until it was finished (i.e. agreed by all and signed off).

So come on everybody, let's have your views!
Example - Are we okay about the size and style of the font?
andy stanton - 16-11-16

Personally Andy I can't see what's wrong with the site, to me you put things there for a reason. If you remove subject matter that's never used fair enough.
Sorry about the length of time to reply but was bowled over by the overwhelming response.

chris - 20-11-16

Andy,
Just a thought.
We seem to have a bit of duplication of stuff on the web page
e.g.SET LISTS - in the normal grey box on the left, and in the big grey box on the right.
A folder for GIG SET LISTS, separate from the normal weekly set lists would be good in the
grey box on the left, with next gig set list coming up at the top of folder.
Just a few possibles:
A Countdown clock to next gig, 4 days 3 hrs 30 mins.
Email Txt.SMS notification like GP Appointment.
Stephen

gamble183 - 20-11-16

Further thoughts:

1. Recent Songs Folder in grey box than at bottom left.
2. All the chord, transposer, glossary, technical stuff in folder.
Suggestion: Chords Info  or in Library, Admin ?

Stephen

gamble183 - 20-11-16

Basically, I think we're singing from the same proverbial.

I thought of have four main folders:-
1. Songs - incorporating The List of Songs, Tabs and Chords.
2. Dates - incorporating The Diary and the Set Lists
3. Comms - incorporating Chat, Notices and Contact
4. Reference - incorporating all three libraries (documents, images and audio clips) and links.
I'm planning to put a link on the present site to a none functioning dummy version so people can be part of its development.

Hello folks. Thought for the day Allington have asked the group to play songs they can sing along to. Does this mean that the songs we play are so obscure nobody has heard them or maybe something else. I suppose it depends on what you've had to drink.

Just a reminder for those who are attending the Dementia Group gig tomorrow and who perhaps haven't read the diary or didn't attend last Wednesday's meeting. The meeting time for tomorrow is 1.00pm - it will be the same time for Thursday's gig as well.

Hi everyone thanks for a nice day out at the Sherwood Craft Centre, Mostly good bits with a few less good bits but overall enjoyable. I thought it was great that everyone had put so much effort into costume, well done everyone. I especially liked David's moustache, I think he should keep it on it makes him look even more distinguished. If anyone has photos of the day I would love to see them please.
I agree I thought everyone did very well in what was a marathon day! People in the (mobile) audience said that they had enjoyed the performance. A couple of folk commented on how good Bob was as MC and compere. Of course well know this but it was nice for his charisma and pizzas to be recognised by the public (pizzazz I think I meant although he is probably a dab with Italian cookery). Thanks to Bob (and Christine) for all the work that went in to organising the day.

I'll be shortly trying to put a couple of photos of the band at Edwinstowe yesterday on this site and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I don't break Andy's pride and joy whilst doing it!  Thanks for David's comments but I hope that the curry I'm about to enjoy this evening doesn't repeat on me as much as his message.  I hope you all enjoyed yesterday's event, lengthy as it was.  The organisers really appreciated our enthusiasm in joining in with the theme.  In addition to providing us with the food and drink during the day they donated £40 to band funds and the bucket raised £15.80 after I have taken out the £10 "encouragement" coinage I had thrown in it.
bob cawson - 27-11-16

Wow that sounds as if it makes the day A RESUT!!
Tony

tony dawes - 27-11-16

Thanks for the compliment re the tash Tony. I can tell you I thought I was going to have to wear it for life, don't know what glue they used but I was an hour getting the bloody thing off. It now has pride and place stuck on our inside door. Could'nt agree more about the day, it all went very well and was obviously well received. Many thanks to Bob and Christine for their stirling efforts. Also a pat on the back to everyone who came in costume, as the photo shows it was well worth the effort.

I have just placed on this site the play list for this Saturdays gig at the TROC.  My aim is to give the residents a few Christmas songs along with a selection of music hall type songs that they can actually (hopefully) sing along with.  The care home staff are happy with this idea.  The final selection will be made after this Wednesday's band meeting that is being held at the Balderton Scout Hut.  I also intend to use the same play list for the Lancaster Grange gig on Friday 9th December.  Song sheets for the residents of both care homes are 60% completed.
Those members who have indicated that they will be attending the TROC gig are:  Alan, Bob, Chris, Christine, Colleen, David H, David N, Gill, Jeff, Roger,Jim, Rita.  If there are any withdrawals/additions to this list please let me know by this Thursday

Here's another brand new feature.
I know there are still bewildered folk out there who can't discern the difference between a 'reply' and a 'new topic' on this website. If you put a 'reply' in the new topic box, this simple system just records it as a new topic and you lose the continuity of the topic you were supposed to be replying to.

To clarify that situation I've added an extra box to the 'new topic' so that you can give a title to the topic. If you find you don't need a new title then the chances are good that you are using the wrong dialogue box, and what you need to do is click on 'reply' at the end of the comment you want to reply to.

It's like herding cats.

The new site is coming along.  I'll soon be putting a preview link up so that you can see what you think of it.
Hi Andy,on another subject what is the procedure if any for downloading SET LISTS to my android.
tony dawes - 29-11-16

There isn't one just for the set lists, but now you mention it that must be useful.  That might be a useful feature on the new site.

The set lists are incorporated into the beginning of the Download for the Songbook (Right of the screen).

In the meantime have you tried copy and paste from the set list display to something like Word?

andy stanton - 29-11-16

That would be great Andy, at the moment I either Print direct from the set list or go through the process of downloading the songbook onto my android and then spend time searching for each song as we go along. A download set list facility would save lots of paper ink and time and make sets at gigs slicker.
Thanks Andy
Tony

tony dawes - 29-11-16

I've just checked, Tony, and I didn't think I was mistaken.  If you download the song book, and open it using index.html or AA StartUp.html you get the list of the songs, and at the top of the list are the set lists.  If open up a set list you can toggle in and out of the songs on the list to your heart's content.  Promise!
andy stanton - 29-11-16

Tony/Andy,

Samsung Galaxy/Android

At the moment I copy/paste Set list of songs in to Word and resize to one page and print.
For the actual songs in the Set I create a folder offline under folders:
My Files/Ukulele/Gigs/for the Gig e.g. Sherwood/date, and copy gig songs to the folder - it sorts them alphabetical, but you've got the printed list.
I am trying to get a 10.1" 16GB Samsung Tablet, (so I can see the whole song) as they were on offer at £159, but seems Black Friday/Cyber Monday beat me to it at Newark PC World.
Any in Sheffield ?

Oscar's Sunday Rebels 4th December
If you intend to attend Oscar's Sunday Rebels 4th December , I have had notice that 10 of the Christmas songs will need a capo (unless you can transpose on the fly).
A capo... on a ukulele....
What do you think your index finger is for?

andy stanton - 29-11-16

Just the messenger, I have no idea of what the chords or the songs are, I have been told that  for 10 songs on the Christmas list the guitars need a capo on three to tie in with the piano key?
jefft - 30-11-16

Stop press from Steve, "Oscar's Sunday Rebles":
I’ve sorted some books for the Ukes to play along too in the same key as piano so no need to capo. Do you think 6 books will be enough.
Cheers
Steve
