Just a reminder that this coming Wednesday's meeting (the 9th) will be a normal meeting not an "Improvers Group".  The selections to play will come from the set lists already published for the 2nd & 16 Sep plus those song sheets handed out at last Wednesday's meeting.

RAY CHARLES
I've had a look at the Ray Charles Medley

Take these chains: Ray sang it in F.  We sing it in D
Your Cheatin' Heart: Ray sang it in Eb.  We sing it in C
I can't stop loving you: Ray sang it in F.  We sing it in C

It makes a lot of sense to sing a whole Medley in the same key.
I would propose the entire thing is done in C, and accordingly I'll transpose
the song sheet we have have, and put it on the old play list.

As part of the "Ukulele" traffic that I read on the internet, this article caught my eye, does it ring any bells?

I don’t play “gigs” much, because the music I love best--funny, sweet, catchy songs from the 1920s and 30s--doesn’t have much of an audience these days But when a pal asked me to come by the senior housing place where he works, I had to say yes.
The elders arrived by foot, crutch, and wheelchair, and settled in for their afternoon’s entertainment.
I launched into my 1920s song cycle. Greatest hits from Maurice Chevalier, Helen Kane, Ukulele Ike, and--
Well...
I’ve had some experience. I can “read” a crowd.
I would describe the response here as "polite. Merely “polite."
Are their hearing aids up? I wondered. Is it nap time? Do they need tea?
Finally, a woman in the back, who had been brought in a bed, yelled out: “Know any Rolling Stones?"
Ah.
That was it.
My repertoire was nearly 100 years old. These songs were old even when these old people were young.
Now here’s the good news.
So, I gave the lady what she wanted. “Honkey Tonk Women,” “Ruby Tuesday,” and a pretty damn impressive ukulele version of “Street Fighting Man.”
And the crowd went wild.

I've said this before.  The residents of care homes these days were into Rock and Roll when they were young.  Cole Porter, Hank Williams, Hoagy Carmichael and their contemporaries wrote songs for their parents' generation.

Hi everybody,
Thanks for the UOGB DVD.  We watched it last night whilst tippling through a rather fine bottle of Bordeaux.
Of course I'm still going to be around on line, so if there are any ideas you would like to share with me, then we have this comments page, and do feel free to email me.  I'll continue to service this website along with Robin, Jeff and Bob.
So watch this space.
Any valedictory is not worth a fig unless it is overloaded with sage advice.  This is no exception so I have put a few thoughts about Arranging Songs in the library.
Have fun!

Jeff, how do you do  it?  You have a positive genius for exposing the weeknesses of this web site.
The key signature format was easy enough (2:2 - 3:4 - 4:4 - 6:8) etc. but no you have to use your own (4/4) and then just to complete it you put just 'C' instead of 'Key:C'.

How do you manage it?

andy stanton - 20-09-15

Sorry Andy, I normally just type "4" and the rest comes up as if by default, Which one was it? Prob posted at 02:00.

You know the old adage "make something fool proof and somebody will make a new kind of fool"
jefft - 20-09-15

It's ok, I've patched it up so that if you don't use the right format you just can't post it.  And no worries mate.  It's handy having someone test your coding until it breaks because its the only way it will improve.

Well folks,
This is my last week in Newark, and the last improvers' group I'll run.
Someone will have to take over. That is an absolutely must because it is
the space where people can take risks and do their thing.  It is what it
says on the jar, the group that allows people to improve.

This time will be a jam session. Bring along your party pieces. I'm going to.
And let's boogie!

Follow a consensus of opinion today in the improvers group (including Andy on his last session) decided that in the song "Down By The Riverside" any line which started:
"I aint gonna G7study"
Should read:
"I G7aint gonna study".
This applies to verse and chorus.
Not every line, just the second and fourth lines of verse and chorus.

Hello Newark U3A Ukulele Happy Band. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone at the group. Your friendliness at my two taster sessions made it fun. I have really enjoyed being part of the band, and will be coming along to the next meeting as a member. Paddy x

Just a reminder that there is a normal band meeting this Wednesday (30 Sep).  The songs have been placed in the Set List.  The first 12 listed plus a version of Green Door are the those that will hopefully be the opening ones for the Notts County Show.
We have a new member, Jim Leek, joining us on Wednesday – he is a member of the Singing for Fun group and is a keen singer – he should prove an asset.  He has some experience of ukulele playing.  Also visiting the group will be an acquaintance of David N’s from his scouting activities.  He has recently retired from the Corps of Army Musicians and although he is not a ukulele player I felt his musical experience might prove beneficial with regard to public performance, arrangements etc.  Hence the invite – I’m sure he will let us know if he is interested/able to help out.
We have been invited to play at the Troc Christmas Fayre on Saturday 5 Dec for 30 minutes starting between 2.00/2.30pm.  I have provisionally accepted the invite subject to enough members being interested.  They are happy if we keep the Christmas numbers to a minimum!

Looks like being a interesting afternoon Bob, unfortunately one I have to miss courtesy of the NHS. See you at the next session!
